Bus tour or drive yourself?
The bus wins for most, and it's not laziness, it's math: it's more than 8 hours on the road each day, and on a tour you spend them looking out panoramic windows while someone else drives. The buses stop at the important spots (Te Anau, the Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, Monkey Creek) and on the way back you can take the nap that the scenery denied you on the way there.
Driving has its rewards if you want your own schedule and unhurried stops. But it requires leaving around 6:00 AM, respecting an alpine road with changeable weather, and one unforgiving fact: there are no gas stations after Te Anau. A full tank is a must. From June to September, chains may be required for the Homer Tunnel section.
![]() The Cruise: What to Expect When the Ship Sets SailAll cruises cover the essentials: they skirt the Mitre Peak, that 1,692-meter pyramid plunging vertically into the water, get up close to Stirling Falls so close you'll be splashed in the face, and look for seals basking on the rocks. With luck, you might even spot dolphins escorting the bow. Smaller boats get closer, larger ones have more decks. Whichever you choose, bundle up: the fjord wind is relentless, even in January. The secret no one tells you: pray for rainMilford receives about 7 meters of rain a year, making it one of the rainiest places on Earth. If your day dawns wet, don't cancel anything. With rain, the fjord transforms: hundreds of temporary waterfalls erupt down the granite walls, waterfalls that simply don't exist in the sun. Milford's epic days are usually the wet ones. Word.![]() What to bring
Piopiotahi is a protected treasureThe fjord belongs to Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Site. Here, the Tiaki promise means not feeding seals, dolphins, or keas, leaving no trace at the trailheads, and choosing tour operators committed to conservation. We are visitors in the home of other species. Let's behave as good guests. Fits into your itinerary? If you have 3 days or more, Milford deserves a full day, as we suggest in the 3-day itinerary on Queenstown. Not up for a 12-hour hike? The short scenic route is called Glenorchy: 45 minutes and another world. About the AuthorConnecting Queenstown local team Book your experiences at QueenstownGet Started |
