Glenorchy from Queenstown: a day trip to paradise

Can only make a short trip from Queenstown? Make it Glenorchy. It's a 45-minute drive along what many consider New Zealand's most beautiful scenic route, skirting Lake Wakatipu to a village of 400 inhabitants where time seems to slow down and the mountains look freshly painted. Ideal time: Half a day, or a full day if you add hiking or kayaking. Services: Minimal: a coffee shop and little else. Leave with fuel and water from Queenstown. Best time: Early morning with the mirror-like lake, or sunset with its cinematic light. The road is part of the plan. The Glenorchy-Queenstown Road winds along the lake with marked viewpoints that justify leaving with plenty of time. The must-see is Bennetts Bluff: stop only in the designated parking area (stopping on the shoulder is dangerous and will result in a fine) and give yourself five minutes to take in Pig and Pigeon Islands floating in the blue of Lake Wakatipu. You are going to take the photo of the trip without almost getting out of the car.
